minimal dark academia
This was a styling of a room for a client. She had many antiques, but didn't know how to complete the space to create the look that she wanted. She had already painted the room this beautiful color and had built the cabinets in the room for storage. The furniture placement was also going to remain unchanged. She wanted a dark academia feel but also prefers a more minimalist style, which is often something you don't find with dark academia. She also didn't want to veer to much into the "creepy" realm of some dark academia styles. The bedroom was the only space being designed for this project and is located in the upper left.
Dark velvet curtains fit so well in dark academia aesthetic. The built-in cabinets were topped with books and given some thick pulls to help add to the look.
The client already owned the bed frame and mattress but didn't have bedding for it yet. I filled the bed with many layers and textures rather than patterns to add interest while keeping the space feeling visually less cluttered.
The wall was bumped out 6" in a bit of an awkward way. This was used as a shelf to add accessories near the head of the bed. On the other side of the window was a breaker box. This was hidden with a large painting.
The vanity, mirror, cubby, and wooden lamp were items the client already owned. I suggested filling the cubby with some beautiful glass bottles/jars to add interest without adding additional colors to the space to keep it visually less cluttered.
The sconce helps balance the accessories around the mirror while adding to the charm of the aesthetic and providing another light source.
Accessories are kept mostly minimal with just a few things - candles, books, scrolls, and a magnifying glass.
Plants are also scattered throughout the space to bring in life and a hint at botany which is often associated with dark academia.
The dresser is also something that the client already owned, as well as the clock and the large painting. In front of the clock is an antique image viewer that the client also already owned. I was able to show her a way to arrange all of these items in the room to fit the aesthetic.
Thank you so much, Tetiana!!😊
