I developed this design using some of the ideas from A Pattern Language. Bedrooms with East windows. Courtyard to the South. I wanted a plan with lots of light.
Office with a South facing window.
Pantry off the kitchen and convenient to the garage makes cooking and putting away groceries easy. Laundry near the back door so you can get to the clothes line!
Each of the bedrooms has a desk, a cozy reading area and the bed, as well as storage.
Glass doors opening into the hallway allow light to come in from the courtyard side of the house as well as the East side.
Long curtains partition off the bed so that it feels more private.
The entryway to the left shelters the living area from people at the door.
Living room is open to the dining area, but feels like a separate space.
Lots of South facing windows looking into the courtyard allow passive solar gain in the Winter, and refreshing views Spring, Summer, and Fall.
The curved library is one of my favorite parts of this house. Because the window faces North East there will be no direct sunlight on the books to minimize fading.
Media area for everyone to get together.
