Day Of The Death
This is a unique tradition in Mexico, where once in a year, we are gathered around with family and friends, to remember our loved ones whom had passed away, to cheer in unity for all the memories & happiness we shared together with them. We set up a memorial called "altar de muertos" to guide their souls back to our home with a path covered with flowers "cempasuchil" (orange) and "flor de terciopelo" (purple) & candles to let them know we are prepared to greet them. Also we put their pictures surrounded with their favorite food and a special item they cherished the most, the place is decorated with colorful paper garlands called "papel picado". We light up a scented rock called "copal" to guide them back to the spirit world. Essential stuff are added as well, such as: salt, sugar, water, fruits, vegetables and a traditional treat called "calaverita" with their names written. And the famous pastry called "pan de muerto". It is believed that reincarnation does exist, and we transform ourselves into mystical creatures called "alebrijes". October 27 for pets. November 1 for children. And November 2 for adults.
